Throughout the year, there are countless health observances that raise awareness for a variety of conditions (both big and small) and also remind ourselves and our students to be proactive and stay on top of their health. These days or months are often celebrated by hospitals, healthcare nonprofits, patients, media, and schools. March Health Talk: National Nutrition Month
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a healthy diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy proteins like beans, eggs, nuts, seafood, and poultry, while limiting added sugars, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and sodium. Additionally, experts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommend eating 2½ cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruit per day (based on a 2,000 calorie per day diet)
February Health Talk: Children's Oral Health Month
National Childrens Dental Health Month raises awareness of the importance of teaching children good oral habits early to ensure a lifetime of healthy smiles. Parents or caregivers are essential and can promote children's dental health this month and throughout the year. Support children's dental health by working with dental professionals on specific topics such as:
- Tooth decay
- Getting your child familiar with their dentist's office
- Preventing crowded teeth
- Healthy gums in later years
Keeping up with daily oral care and visiting the dentist at least twice a year for an oral examination and professional cleanings are steps you can take towards a happier and healthier mouth! Setting the foundation for your child earlier in life will set your child up for success in the future.
December Health Talk: Safe Toys and Gifts
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 251,700 toy-related injuries were treated by hospital emergency rooms around the U.S. in 2010. Of those, 72% of them were people younger than 15 years old. A few years earlier, toymakers recalled over 19 million toys across the globe due to safety concerns like lead paint and small magnets. November is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country seek to bring attention to diabetes. This year’s focus is on taking action to prevent diabetes health problems.Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. It affects about 37 million Americans, including adults and youth. Diabetes can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart, and it is linked to some types of cancer.
But there’s also good news: Taking charge of your health may help you prevent diabetes health problems.
